On the Combination of Heaven with Man

个人生命应与宇宙生命取得本质上的融合无间,要做到这一点,必须自强不息,孔子提倡仁义与礼乐,主张举贤才,慎刑罚,薄赋敛、重教化。孟子进一步发挥民贵君轻的民主思想,把仁义礼智信看成做人的根本。中国人的最高道德是学做圣贤,理想的实现是由自己出发而关连着人、事和天三个方面关系的合理与调和;必须从自己的内省修德做起,先正德,然后才可以谈利用与厚生。

An individual's one should integrate with the universe one. In order to make it, one should make unremitting efforts to improve oneself. The Confucian advocates benevolence and courtesy. Being the first philosopher advancing the thought of combining heaven with man, Mencius further points out the democratic thought of noblizing the common people and belittling the rulers. The benevolence and courtesy are the essence for an individual and the utmost morality for a Chinese is to be a sage and man of virtue. To realize the ideal has much to do with the reasonability and harmony of the relationship between man, thing and heaven.
