Baudelaire lived in a period of time when romanticism was on the ebb and new fields of poetry were cried for. The Flower of Evil (Les Fleurs du mal), his well known poetry anthology, displays its opposition of the traditional culture and values via its nightmarish depiction of the doleful and abnormal humanity and the desperate degradation caused by absurdity of the society. Certain themes of its love poems particularly reveal the poet's counteraction against the Virgin Mary image of women, of which the mainstream literature was in praise. By doing so, Baudelaire has successfully dissolved the idealistic aesthetical principles of classical poetry and constructed a new system of values and conception of aesthetics, namely, the 'Beauty of Evil'.
