百科全书条目释文是一种权威性辞书的说明文字,其语言朴实、简洁、严谨.中文百科全书具有独特的"辞书语言"语体特征.百科全书的英汉翻译涉及到如何把释文从英语百科全书语体转化为相应的中文语体.本文的研究建立在<麦克米伦百科全书>基础之上.
The explanatory article in encyclopaedia is a kind of expository writing. Its style is characterized by simplicity, conciseness and well-knitness. The Chinese encyclopaedia bears a distinctive stylistic feature which is characteristic of Chinese encyclopaedias. Comments are made on how to translate English explanatory articles into Chinese, basing on the author's study and participation in the translation of The Macmillan Encyclopaedia .
