New Territory: Remapping Chinese American Literature

美国华裔文学已经历了100多年的发展历程。本文在讨论一些代表作家的基础上,着重探讨美国华裔文学的分期和主题。由于美国华裔特殊的生活经历和社会地位,美国华裔作家大多具备双重文化身份和视野,大多意识到美国华人/华裔的双重文化/民族属性及其“他者”地位;于是他们以考虑自身的存在状态为契机,以独特的生命体验和观物视角关注并表现华裔群体在中美两个世界和两种文化碰撞中的生存以及对于命运和人生选择的思考。

In the past 100 years, Chinese American literature has undergone a history of ups and downs. Since the 1970s, Chinese American literature has begun to take on a new look of flourishing in the multi-cultural context of American literary arena. By discussing some representative Chinese American writers in different times, this paper attempts to reinvestigate Chinese American literature by mapping, for the first time, its different stages of development and examining its most important themes and concerns. By studying the 'struggle, tension, and conflict' between different cultures and different ways of life, this paper also discusses the double 'Other' positions of Chinese Americans in American society --- the ethnic 'Other' and the female 'Other'.
