An investigation was made on the average heat flux in the Crystallizer of a slab continuous caster at BAOSTEEL. It was found that, when the casting speed increases to 1.2 m/min and more, the average heat flux on broad faces does not increase further with the casting speed while the temperature of the inlet and the outlet cooling water does not changed. The average heat flux is also affected by the carbon content of casting steel. When a steel with about 0.11% carbon is cast, the average heat flux of both the broad and narrow faces of the mold decreases to minimum values. When the casting speed is more than 1.0 m/min and the carbon content is 0.002%-0.05% or 0.13%-0.15%, the average heat flux on narrow faces is very close to the average heat flux on broad faces or even higher. This fact indicates that the mold wall taper should be reduced for the high speed casting of the steels with those carbon contents.
