Putting in the consumer cutural settings of the big city Shanghai, the Haipai novels sketched out the true colours of human existence in material and spirit,dissimilation and distortion of human nature under the extremely expanded material desire and sexual passion,with the relations between human beings and material,sexual relations between men and women being two principal clues. Thus confirmed was the modernity theme of the conflict between modern civilization and human nature,which was explored by Shanghai writers.
