Interleukin -6 (IL- 6) is a cytokine with a wide variety of effects on cells involved in inflammation and pregnancy.Many cell types brave been shown to produce IL-6 in vitro, however, very little is known about its source and role in vivo. By using in situ hybridization, we examlned IL-6 cRNA expression in the mouse uterus-placental unit during pregnancy. The results sconed that cRNA for IL-6 was not expressed on day 3 and 4 of pregnancy ill uterine decidual cells, but was expressed in samples obtained on day 1 and day 5-11 of pregnancy. IL-6 expression was observed from undetectable on day 3-4 to a peak level on day 5- 6 and then decreased on day 7-8. The expression of IL-6 cRNA in uterus during pregnancy implies that IL-6 plays an important physiological role in embryo implantation.
