In the last year or so, there emerged an identity crisis in Hong Kong. Some Hong Kong residents have stressed that they are the people of Hong Kong, though the great majority usually describe themselves as Chinese. This article analyses the changes occurred in the identities and value systems of the Hong Kong residents. From the end of WWII to 1967, Hong Kong residents usually called themselves 'people fleeing from China's hinterland' with the purpose of living a stable life in Hong Kong. From 1967 to 1984, the identity of 'Hong Kong citizens' began to appear and the wish of Hong Kong residents was to improve every aspect of their livelihood. From 1984 onwards, Hong Kong residents gradually realised that they would become 'Chinese National' when Hong Kong returned to China in 1997 and that the Basic Law would protect their rights to freedom, the rule of law and progression towards a democratic government. The conclusion is: Hong Kong residents who stress their 'Hong Kong' identity, to the extent of rejecting everything 'Chinese', would put the interests of Hong Kong as the first priority, while those who identify themselves as 'Chinese' would welcome an integration of the interests of 'One Country' and 'Two Systems'.
