China's 'the Belt and Road'(B & R) initiative cannot be successfully implemented without the cooperation and support of social science studies. This article addresses that the development of B & R is not only a process of regional economic integration. Social scientists also need to conduct indepth analyses on the complex political, social, and cultural background of the nations and regions along the B & R. Based on the major critiques of Huntington's 'clash of civilization' theory, the present study aims to analyze the origins of the current conflicts between the mainland and Hong Kong. These critiques focus on the following four theoretical dimensions:'diversity of civilizations','inequality derived from social development','demographic change and immigration'and'negative effects of modern media'. In general, this article takes Hong Kong as an example to construct a preliminary theoretical framework for future comparative studies. Social scientists could then analyze the other societies along the B & R from the above four dimensions. Such social science studies will benefit all relevant parties involved into the initiative of B & R.
