Grammaticalization of Epistemic Modal Adverb X-ran

This paper focuses on five epistemic modal adverbs in contemporary Chinese dang-ran,zi-ran,bi-ran,duan-ran,ding-ran and their grammaticalization from the perspectives of subjectivity and constructional changes.It is argued that the model adverbs are developed from the original Xran construe through host-class expansion and continue to evolve a sub-construe of X-ran.The model verb’s functional content domain expands from the predicate of a sentence to the whole sentense,among which zi-ran and dang-ran even evolve to have some new communicative function.
