《马氏文通》作为中国第一本较为全面、完整的语法书,吸收了西方语法思想和中国古代小学传统而成。通过分析本书正名卷之一中摘录的12个句子,作者试图澄清一直困扰着中国语法学家的几大问题。作者认为《马氏文通》中虚实字的分类不仅要考虑字义,还要考虑字在句子中所作的成分,因此虚实字的分析在中文语法中应当是动态的关系。尽管《马氏文通》有许多不足之处,国内外语言学家都应认识到这本书对于语言学界的重要意义。

Mr.Ma's Compleat Grammar 馬氏文通 is famous as the first comprehensive grammar book written by a Chinese in China and is considered as a combination of western grammatical thoughts and Chinese philological traditions. By observing 12 sentences chosen from Volume One of the book,the author of the paper tries to clarify some daunting issues occurring in Chinese linguists.The author finds that the dual criteria of meaning and functional label of a word can explain the distinction between full word and empty word and hence establish a dynamic relationship in linguistic analyses. Despite the demerits of Mr. Ma's Compleat Grammar,linguists at home and abroad should recognize the significance of the book.
