Chinese Language and Confucian Culture in Singapore

新加坡地处东南亚中心,是东西方经济文化交流的桥梁。儒家文化在新加坡的传承,可以说和华文教育密不可分。新加坡曾经先后出现两次儒家文化复兴运动,而在此之前亦曾先后出现两次华语运动。早期的私塾是儒家文化的实际传播机构,后来南洋大学的创立也有为华人保留传统文化精髓的目的。因此,作为儒家文化主要载体的华文以及华文教育如果不受重视,势必影响到新加坡儒学的未来。

Singapore is located in the center of Southeast Asia and serves as a bridge for economic and cultural exchanges between the East and the West.The inheritance of Confucian culture in Singapore can be said to be inseparable from Chinese education.In Singapore,there were two Confucian cultural revival movements,and before that,there were two Chinese language movements.Private schools in the early days were the actual dissemination institutions of Confucian culture.Later,Nanyang University was founded to preserve the essence of traditional culture for Chinese people.Therefore,as the main carrier of Confucian culture,Chinese language and Chinese education,if not taken seriously,will inevitably affect the future of Confucianism in Singapore.
