Typography,Illustrations and Catchwords in Milton’s 1720 Poetical Works:A Case Study of Analytical Bibliography

新时代的外国文学研究需要研究方法的革新。本文使用分析目录学的方法,从印刷史和出版史的角度对英国著名文学出版商雅各布·汤森二世出版的《弥尔顿诗集》(1720)进行了微观考察,以此揭示文学文本的呈现形式及其生产过程。本文对分析目录学案例《弥尔顿诗集》(1720)的讨论,可以演示分析目录学的一般方法,而目录学(包括分析目录学)的方法将促进我国新时代的外国文学研究。作为研究背景,本文还简要介绍了分析目录学在英国和美国的发展概况、代表人物及方法论特征。

Foreign literature research in the New Era demands methodological innovations. This essay performs a meticulous analysis of certain aspects of the two volumes of The Poetical Works of Mr. John Milton published by the important literary publisher Jacob Tonson Ⅱ in 1720 with the method of analytical bibliography from the perspective of printing and publishing history,aiming to display the presentation form of the literary text and probe its production process. The case study of Milton’s Poetical Works(1720) serves to illustrate the method of analytical bibliography in general. The tool of bibliography(including analytical bibliography) can further China’s foreign literature research in the New Era. The article also introduces briefly the development, representative figures, and methodological feature of AngloAmerican analytical bibliography in literature review.
