The paper intends to discuss Gaddis’juxtaposition of historical, cultural and literary texts through allusion, which dyes fictional scenes and characters with postmodern historicity in his Carpenter’s Gothic.Carpenter’s Gothic reflects the passing glory and the traditional Christian culture erodes under universal hypocrisy in the fiction. On the other hand, major unsuccessful characters,in the shadow of Jane Eyre and a strayed mariner, are entangled with the historicity, and their anguish derives from the association between the alluded and the allusion. However, there is no sense of failure when individual lives outside the bond.
