The myth of Pygmalion is an enduring one in European literature and its sanctification of male creative prowess has captivated the fascination of generations of artists. The inhering gender discourse of Pygmalionism became the focus of critical and artistic exploration in the late nineteenth century Britain, especially among the Aesthetic artists. This article examines Vernon Lee’s revision and deconstruction of the Pygmalion myth and analyses how a ghost narrative unique to fantastic literature may offer an outlet for female creativity and women’s rebellion against the master discourse inscribed onto their body.
