An Aesthetic Study on the Characters in The Curse of Kehama from the Mythological Perspective

两个多世纪以来,欧美学者被罗伯特·骚塞的史诗人物所吸引,对它的研究由最初的思想评论为主过渡到当今的多元化批评。本文对骚塞史诗《克哈马的诅咒》的人物进行神话审美研究。本文首先探讨主题人物克哈马极端丑恶的'极限性'特征,在此基础上研究骚塞'妖魔化'主题人物的创作意图,剖析其史诗人物塑造模式与读者的审美意识的互动,表明贯穿其中的神韵和神谕能够给读者带来神话式的审美体验。

The study of the characters in Robert Southey’s epics has been appealing to many European and American scholars for over two centuries,and it has undergone a gradual transition from the initial textual criticism to the present pluralistic criticism.This paper focuses on the aesthetic study on the characters in The Curse of Kehama from the mythological perspective.Based on the discussion of the extremity of Kehama’s hideousness,the paper explores Southey’s intention behind the demonization of the thematic character in the poem.Owing to the interaction between the characterization and the readers’aesthetic consciousness,much mythical aesthetic feeling is manifested through the theological atmosphere and oracle in the whole epic.
