Richard Flanagan’s The Unknown Terrorist demonstrates the pervasiveness of terrorism as a dominant political and cultural issue in Australian society since 9·11.Flanagan admirably combines the modern media with artistic creation, with the aim of revealing the essence and operational mode of discourse power. The novel is largely concerned with the interdependent and twisted relationship between government, media and the public, which are considered as the three cornerstones of the mass media industry. It exposes and interrogates the use of terrorism by government and media to manipulate discourse power, while critiquing their attempts to exert, maintain and increase power to achieve their respective hidden agendas.
