图形艺术与传统语言虽分属不同的符号系统,但二者都是利用符号自身的置换组合来进行信息传递的过程。修辞的应用可以摆脱图形表现的弊端,传达画面不能表述的深层意义,使平面化的图形具有像语言一样的线性表达过程。除象征、比喻等大众熟知的修辞格使用之外,比拟、借代、夸张、对比、移用,通感、白描等表述手法也常见于图形之中。这些修辞格互为共用,大大拓展了图形语言的表现空间。

Graphic arts and traditional language belong to different symbol systems, however, both of them make use of replacement combination of symbols themselves to proceed the process of information transmission. The application of rhetoric can get rid of the disadvantages of graphics performance, express the deep meaning and context words which the picture cannot express, and make the planarity graphics possess linear expression process like languages. In addition to symbol, metaphor and other figures which are known by the public, expression technique like metaphor, metonymy, exaggeration, contrast, previous fiscal year, synaesthesia and lyrics is also common among graphics. These figures of speech are shared and greatly expand the performance space of graphic language.
