As an important contemporary American woman writer, Joyce Carol Oates often depicts violence in order to write about the fear and tension lurking in common peoples hearts. In her masterpiece Them, Oates shows the effects of male violence on her female characters, and also demonstrates the physical and spiritual devastations of malecentered ideology on women. The novel captures and manifests the turbulent social mentality of the 1960s and 70s in the United States, revealing the sadness and helplessness of women characters' victimization under violence.
