Taking narrative inquiry as the method, this study investigates two college students’phonological acquisition and identity construction based on Darvin and Norton’s(2015)New Model of Investment. The findings show that traditional learning ideology,i.e.,attachment to native-like accent, was still dominant among learners in the digitalized age.Under the guidance of an imagined identity as members of the native speaker community, the learners invested in their phonological learning and became faithful imitators of English and American accent. However, digitalization supplied new spaces for them to make contact with ELF community, and with the accumulation of linguistic capital, they finally broke the native-speaker standard, and became ELF users.
