The Sourh was his own source of greatinterest, and it provided him with a base to be focused on to reveal his sense ofSouthern society and history. Faulkner succeeded both in going bey ond the superf-icial record of the South as a unique, historical region and in presenting a profound analysis of universal human problems. Most significant of all was his abi-lity to bring his fictional world to such a high level of imaginative realization-
