The spirit of the age and the features of its people and culture are carved in its poetry.Yan Tianji was an important patriotic scholar of Central Yunnan in the late Qing dynasty.He experienced the baptism of his times,endured the adversities of his family and country,and survived his lumpy official career.He wrote poetry and 125 poems under his name were collected in Yuxi Literature Anthology.Patriotic passions,loyalty to the state,and unfading nostalgia permeate these poems in heroic but tragic style,vividly betraying the tremendous shocks brought to the people by a country that was collapsing.His diction was fresh and elegant,with proper allusions used in unique context,revealing considerable literary accomplishments and profound humanistic concerns of the poet.His works add a ray of bright light to the Chinese poetry.
