Chinese car trade: tracking traffic on a two-way street

中国汽车进口量已趋于稳定,而出口量开始强势增长。近些年,随着国内汽车市场的快速发展,中国在全球汽车海运贸易中正扮演着愈发重要的角色。2018年,中国汽车海运进出口总量约占全球汽车海运贸易量的5%。中国已是全球最大的汽车进口国之一,近些年中国汽车进口量似乎已趋于稳定,而出口量开始强势增长。

China has become a more important part of global seaborne car trade in recent years, alongside the rapid development of the country’s domestic car market. By 2018, China’s combined seaborne imports and exportsaccounted for around 5% of total seaborne car trade, and whilst Chinese imports appear to have entered a more mature phase in recent years, the country’s exports now seem to be taking off. So, China is still currently a net car importer, but imports appear to be facing a range of pressures. Looser restrictions on foreign car producers may prove a helpful factor in supporting exports further, but building economic risks and trade tensions will need to be tracked closely. Still, it seems as though China’s contribution to global seaborne car trade growth may be more likely to be driven by exports rather than imports in the near future.
