When foreign cruise ships officially entered China since 2006, China’s cruise market has experienced various prosperous scenes for more than ten years. However, the Chinese cruise market has changed since 2017, with passenger growth plummeting from 80 per cent to 8 per cent. Facing the adjustment period of cruise industry, how should Chinese cruise operators adjust their pace and start a new round of growth? Ahead of this year’s National Day holiday, China’s cruise market will welcome the maiden voyage of the first luxury cruise ship jointly operated by two major centrally-administered SOEs. China’s first domestic largescale luxury cruise ship is also about to start construction. Will the rise of Chinese brands boost the cruise industry in China? On May 23, 2019, the joint venture Astro Ocean International Cruise Company was set up by COSCO SHIPPING Group and China National Travel Services Group Corporation Limited formally appeared, its first luxury cruise and one of the biggest in Chinese cruise ship--Piano land also formally announced to the world. Piano land, a 70,000-ton luxury cruise ship with 1,870 passengers and 760 crew, will start operations at its home port in China from Xiamen at the end of September.At present, major port cities in China have great enthusiasm for the development of cruise tourism, and 15 cities have clearly put forward the development plan of cruise port, most of which take the cruise home port as the development orientation and target. Xiamen International Cruise Terminal, one of China’s four major cruise home ports, is about to welcome the grand debut of the Chinese domestic cruise ship Piano land. Astro Ocean International Cruise Company has set up an operation headquarters in Xiamen and named its first cruise 'Piano Land', taking Xiamen as its home port for 'debut', reflecting the attraction of Xiamen international cruise’s home port. 'Piano land' will open another engine for Xiamen international cruise home port to realize the diversification and characteristic of cruise products. Over the past 20 years, China Marine & Seaman Service Corporation has sent more than 4,000 professional cruise ship personnel to international cruise ship owners, serving more than 10 famous cruise companies including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Costa, Mediterranean, Novi Veritas and Lixing. And this year, China Marine & Seaman Service Corporation undertakes the 'Piano Land' with staff business. As the sole agent of 'Piano Land', the company is responsible for the recruitment and dispatch of all Chinese crew.
