摘要
'山'(主要是山名中的'山')的英语表达林林总总,既包括常见的mountain,hill,mount等,也包括分门别类的island,rock,peak,range,guyot,inselberg,bornhardt,sea mountain,table mountain等。要比较准确地英译'山',既要知道其在英语里的诸多表达,还要注意有关表达之间的区别,诸如:hill与mountain之区别,mount与mountain之区别,mountain与mountains之区别,tablemount与tablemountains之区别。此外,要准确地英译'山',对历史上'山'的英汉翻译个案或经验也应有所了解。
It’s not that easy to put the Chinese character 山( mainly the specific name of mountain proper names) into English as expected. There are a profusion of relevant expressions of 山 in English,including those commonly-seen ones( i. e. hill, mount and mountain) and those unfamiliar ones such as island, rock, peak,range,guyot,inselberg,bornhardt,sea mountain,table mountain and the like. To do a good job in putting the Chinese character 山 into English,one has to know those expressions and their usages well on the one hand and keep translation experiences of the same type of texts in mind on the other hand.
