古汉语“而”在语篇中的英译——以《石钟山记》为例

A Study on the Translation of Ancient Chinese Character “而”—Taking Stone Bell Mountain as an Example

本文以理查德·斯特拉斯伯格(Richard Strassberg)、林语堂、罗经国和汪榕培翻译的《石钟山记》为例,对比讨论'而'在语篇中的英译,认为古汉语'而'的英译不仅要将其逻辑具体化,以期有效传递文字信息,还应兼顾源语语篇特点,适当考虑语言形式承载的信息,从而实现功能对等最大化。

This paper takes 'Stone Bell Mountain'as an example,exploring the English translation of '而'by comparing and contrasting the English versions by Richard Strassberg, Lin Yutang, Luo Jingguo and Wang Rongpei. It holds that for maximization of functional equivalence,the compositional characteristics of the source text should be taken into consideration in translating the ancient Chinese '而 ' into English. That demands the interpretation of both the logic connections and the smoothness the word carries.
