Reflections on the C-E Translations of Public Signs

汉英公示语已随全球经济一体化进入我们社会生活的各个领域。本文讨论了城市公示语翻译质量不高的现状及原因,分析了汉英公示语的误译主要源于对其重要性认识不足、对公示语的礼貌倾向和中西文化差异关注不够等,提出了要从翻译人员专业化、定期审核汉英公示语、建立监督机制等方面规范城市公示语翻译。

With global economic integration, public signs come into all spheres of social life. But the translation quality of urban signs is not high. After investigating into the C-E translation of public signs, the article indicates that the low quality of translations is caused by the translators’ insufficient recognition of the importance of sign translation, the polite tendency of public signs and the differences between Chinese and western cultures. The way to solve the problem is to put up a supervision mechanism to regulate the public translation.
