This is a Chinese translation of an article by E. Grady Bogue, who was one of four selectors and annotators of the book of '100 Classic Books about Higher Education'. In this article, he reflected the changes and debates of the changes of the expectation of missions of American higher education in the 20th century. He pinpointed that higher education today encounters an unprecedented challenge, thus, seeking the 'soul' of higher education is not an accomplished mission, rather a continuing challenge.
