At the end of 2002, a kind of infectious pneumonia appeared in Guangdong Province, China It was quite different from the pneumonia caused by bacteria, hence, the title of “infectious atypical pneumonia” was given, while the name “atypical pneumonia” was mostly applied or “Fei Dian” in Chinese mandarin for short In March 2003, WHO named this disease “Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)” Since “Atypical Pneumonia” is not a new term and its implication is too extensive and vague In order to facilitate international communication, it is preferable to adopt the title of SARS proposed by WHO In view of the transliteration of “Ai Zi Bing” for AIDS, we recommend the Chinese transliteration of “Sa Si” as the short form for SARS instead of some Chinese terms for SARS in China as well as in other Chinese spoken regions Consulting the transliteration for AIDS, we suggest that the professionals of TCM should accept the name, SARS (Sa Si) Indeed, there is no need to rename another Chinese name for SARS in TCM In order to share the achievements acquired by the treatment and prevention for SARS in TCM with the whole world, it is highly recommended that the application of the unified name of SARS proposed by WHO in TCM should be accepted
