Based on statistics, this article first analyzes the distributional differences in Chinese and English time clauses. Because of the differences, ESL students, especially the lower-leveled ones, are prone to the influence of their native language and put time clauses at the beginning of sentences. The argument can be proved by the analyses of the differences among the uses of English time clauses by ESL students and native speakers. The tendency to put time clauses at the beginning of sentences may influence coherence in writing. This study sheds light on the problems of coherence and monotonous sentence patterns in ESL students' writings.
