The basic concepts of reference materials (RM) and the accreditation of the competence of RM producers are introduced in this article. The writer describes the developing history and the current situation about the accreditation of the competence of RM producers. A comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the use of ISO guide 34 'General requirements for the competence of reference material producers' and ISO/IEC 17025 'General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories' are discussed emphatically.
