By Comparison, this paper holds that node independence, distribution transparence and data repetitiveness are the main characteristics of the design of the distributed database system, and that the selection of the types of distributed database system should be based on the application environment. This paper also discusses the segment and allocation in the design of distributed database system with the 'database system of petroleum exploration and development' being the practical example. It points out the importance of investigating data flow and data use in the design of segment and allocation.
