The Functions of Formulaic Language

摘要公式性语言是一个复杂的现象，包括各种预制的或半预制的语块。这类语块常作为整体储存在语言使用者的记忆里，在使用时直接从记忆中提取，无需经过语法的生成和分析。本文探讨公式性语言在交际中的两大功能：(1)压缩处理时间，为语言处理过程提供捷径，(2)维持社会交际和互动，实现交际目标。文章同时还讨论了语言使用中公式性与创造性的关系问题。 As a complex phenomenon, formulaic language encompasses various kinds of prefabricated or semi-prefabricated word-strings which appear to be stored and retrieved whole from memory. This paper attempts to analyze formulaic language with respect to its functions in (1) reducing processing time and effort, as a short-cutting device, and (2) supporting communication, as a tool in social interaction. The relationship between formulaicity and creativity in language use is also discussed.
