According to Leech`s semantic classification,words have conceptual and associative meanings. The latter is highly culture-specific.Words sharing the same conceptual meaning may differ in associative meaning .This article,seeking to explore the associative meaning in social and cultural content ,analyses the differences of the associative meaning in English and Chinese word or phrases,in attempt to have a better understanding of the associative meaning,which,if not properly interpreted,may make communicative barriers or lead to communicative disasters.
