《现代汉语词典》作为规范现代汉语(口头语和书面语)的工具书,对繁荣中华人民共和国文化教育事业产生了深远影响,反映了中华人民共和国出版史尤其是辞书出版史的发展脉络和演进历程。这部词典也是陈原接触时间最长、关注度最高、影响最为深刻的词典。1974年,陈原因为建议印行《现代汉语词典》与编纂者共同受到大批判,他以此为契机开始研究辞书编纂学和社会语言学。作为出版家和语言学家,他为缓解社会上因"文化大革命"造成的书荒而努力,为这部词典的修订出版、为词典的规范化孜孜不倦地探讨,为中华人民共和国的辞书事业和语言学的发展做出了自己的贡献。

The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary,as reference book to learnd standard contemporary Chinese( oral and writen),has a profound impact on prosperity of culture and education of the New China. It is also a reflection of development and evolution of the publishing history,particularly the history of dictionary publishing. Chen Yuan has spent the most time and paid the most attention to this dictionary,and it is his most influential work. In 1974,Chen Yuan and other lexicographers were criticized,as they suggested the printing and distribution of The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary. He then took this opportunity to start the research of lexicography and sociolinguistics. As a publicationist and linguist,he has made great efforts to mitigate the damage to written culture brought by the Great Cultural Revolution. He devoted himself to revision and publication of this dictionar and standardization of dictionaries, making significant contribution to lexicography and linguistics of the New China.
