Tingzhou in the Southern Song Dynasty featured active government-sponsored book engraving, and passed down many delicate ancient rare books.Zhan Shang,a native from Jianyang which was the center of book engraving, engraved the debut issue of the Collection of Stories(Gan Zhu Ji),and successfully spread the woodblock printing technology to Tingzhou from Jianyang, laying the cornerstone for the prosperity of book engraving in Sibao of Liancheng in the west of Fujian during the period of Ming and Qing dynasties.Yang Fang,a student of Zhu Xi,engraved the Almanac of Tai Chi in Tingzhou as the first individual to do so.Based on the inheritance from the Song and Yuan Dynasties, book engraving activities launched by the government and individuals in Tingzhou had formed their unique systems by late Ming and early Qing. Thus, the viewpoint that the engraving and publishing technology of Sibao bookstores originated from Suzhou and Hangzhou remains open to question.
