Where to Seek His Soul? ——Investigations of Studies in the Life of Qing Folk Artist Shi Yukun

有关清代民间艺人石玉昆的生平著述,前人曾做过不少研究,但是限于资料的缺乏,其中还有不少空白及误传。随着一些新资料的发现及研究的深入,对这一问题有重新进行考察的必要。现在基本可以确认,石玉昆主要生活在嘉庆、道光年间,《三侠五义》为其首创,《小五义》、《续小五义》为较晚的另一位民间艺人所创,与石玉昆无关。

The life of Qing folk artist Shi Yukun was much studied, but for biographical scarcity, many gaps as well as misinformation remained. With the discovery of new data and further studies, a new examination of the issue is necessary. It can be said almost with certainty that Shi lived in the reigns of Emperors Jiaqing and Daoguang, and that he was the founding author of The Three Heroes and the Five Gallants while The Abridged Five Gallants and Sequel to the Abridged Five Gallants had nothing to do with him. The two novels were written by a later folk artist.
