The elderly are highly susceptible to potentially inappropriate medicine(PIM)due to changes in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics induced by physiological aging. At present,a variety of evaluation tools have been developed internationally for screening PIM in the elderly, but PIM standards for the elderly in different countries are based on the listed drugs in the host country, and the methods vary greatly. Therefore, the establishment and optimization of localized PIM evaluation criteria based on the epidemiological data of elderly patients in China can effectively reduce the PIM behaviors in the diagnosis and treatment of elderly patients. This paper introduces the common evaluation tools of potential inappropriate drug use at home and abroad and summarizes their domestic applications and prospects,so as to provide the basis for rational drug use of elderly patients in China.
