It is unknown whether Shanbian Barn Lanterns, which have been spread for hundreds of years, have any relation with Bajiaoxianling. However,a story is spread in Shanbian Village of Songyang Town,Lishui City:In the late Ming Dynasty,a large area of brook beach was located in front of XiaBao Village, overgrown with reed catkins clusters. On Bajiaoxianling behind the village, verdant trees, such as camphor trees and red maples,as well as the sea of bamboo grew there. At the foot of the hill,Qiu family had lived on making bamboo canes for generations. After sunset tigers emerged to destroy crops and kill villagers. Some villagers used bamboo to weave various horse-like animals to scare tigers, which was proved to be effective. From then on,tigers were never seen again. During the Kangxi Bingyin period, the barn lanterns were popular in the village.
