根雕,汉族传统雕刻艺术之一,以树根(包括树身、树瘤、竹根等)的自生形态及畸变形态为艺术创作对象,通过构思立意、艺术加工及工艺处理,创作出人物、动物、器物等艺术形象作品。现代嵊州根雕艺术起步于上世纪70年代,到80年代形成风格,90年代逐渐步入繁荣。作为嵊州根雕传承人的周扬,年少时便痴迷于根雕艺术创作,博采众长并不断创新,艺术风格独树一帜,在根雕界闯出了一番自己的天地。

Root carving,one of the traditional carving arts of the Han people,creates artistic images such as figures,animals and utensils,through creative conception,embellishment and processing while taking roots’ natural forms and distortion forms as the artistic creation objects.Modern Shengzhou Root Carving emerged in the 1970 s,developed its style in the1980 s and flourished gradually in the 1990 s.Zhou Yang,as an inheritor of Shengzhou Root Carving,was obsessed with root carving when he was young.Finally,he formed his unique and artistic style through wide learning and continuous innovation and achieved success in the root carving circle.Zhou Yang always holds the view that if an artist is confined in his own world,no matter how good he does,it is only individual achievement.Only if a group of artists create various artworks with different themes and styles could they present the complete picture of the circle.Hence,he is quite willing to make every endeavor to educate the young generation in order to push root carving to a new high.
