作为一名早期来华的基督教传教士,慕维廉在上海宣教53年,他见证了晚清中国社会的历史变迁,亦是基督教在中国发展之初的亲历者。他所出版的大量汉语宗教福音类文字是其坚守宣教本职的重要表现,这些出版文字内容、形式多样,不仅反映了慕维廉个人在进入中国后的调整与适应,更与晚清的时代变换紧密相连。对慕维廉汉语文字的分析,对研究晚清基督教史有重要意义。

As an early Christian missionary to China,William Muirhead was assigned to Shanghai for 53 years.He witnessed the history of Chinese society in the late Qing and the development of Christianity in Chinese.A large number of his Chinese religious publication was an important manifestation of his insistence on mission.Its content and form not only reflected William Muirhead’s adjustment as individual in Chinese,but also closely connected with the change of the late Qing.The analysis of his Chinese writings has important significance to the study of Christianity history.
