The Chinese Art Exhibition held by China and the Soviet Union opened in Moscow in January 1940.The Academia Sinica, the Palace Museum and the Sino-Soviet Cultural Association selected Chinese ancient artworks through the ages for the exhibition while it was a complicated course because of differences in views in Academia Sinica. The Chinese ancient and anti-invasion artworks in the exhibition had created a sensation in all social circles of the Soviet Union, which was significant to promote the SinoSoviet art and culture exchange and the international influence of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.Due to the outbreak of the Soviet-German war in June 1941,the Chinese Art Exhibition was halted. With the cooling relationship between China and the Soviet Union, the diplomatic negotiations on the return of Chinese artworks in the exhibition were in a dilemma between the two countries.
