Objective To explore the feasibility of team-based learning(TBL) teaching method in the optional course of radiation oncology. Methods A total of 56 undergraduates of China Medical University were chosen for TBL teaching practice and divided into two groups: lecture-based learning(LBL) group(n=28) and TBL group(n=28). Examination results, self-study ability and teaching results of students were compared by test-paper questionnaire survey and clinical skills between two groups during and after the course. Results Self-study tests of TBL group were better than that of LBL group, the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05, P<0.01). Although the examination results between two groups had no statistical significance(37.10±2.69 vs. 37.05±2.78, P=0.764), but there were significant differences in the clinical skills(33.85±2.23 vs. 26.20±2.93, P=0.01) and the total scores(71.28±4.32 vs. 64.25±5.16, P=0.01). Questionnaire survey showed that autonomous learning time, learning interest, the expanded aspect of knowledge, the classroom atmosphere, team working and teaching satisfaction in TBL group were better than those in LBL group, the differences were statistically significant(P<0.01). Conclusion TBL model teaching can improve the self-study ability, make classroom atmosphere active and enhance team work in learning. Students are highly satisfied with TBL and also adapt of it well. TBL teaching in optional coures of radiation oncology is feasible.
