With the sharp rise in incidence of diabetes, its complications pose a serious healthy burden. Osteoarthritis is one of them. Osteoarthritis and diabetes mellitus are close to each other as they can promote their respective functions, but its mechanism is not yet clear. In recent years it is found that the stromal cell-derived factor 1(SDF-1)/chemokine receptor-4(CXCR4) axis play an important role in development and incidence of osteoarthritis through immune inflammatory reaction, damage to the endothelial function, promoting the pathological blood vessel formation, damage to the peripheral nervous system in diabetes mellitus with osteoarthritis, as a result, its targeted therapy become the hot topic of the researches. This paper reviewed briefly on the role of the SDF-1/CXCR4 axis, aimed to provide a new perspective of drug therapy for diabetes mellitus with osteoarthritis.
