Objective To compare the corpus callosum length(CC-L) in early-term neonates and full-term neonates, and to discuss the value of these parameters in evaluation of neonatal brain development. Methods Ninety-seven neonates, born between 37-40+6 weeks, were enrolled in this prospective study. The mean gestational age and the mean weight were(3 374±412) g and(39.29±1.14) weeks. 44 cases in early-term neonates(born between 37-38+6 weeks) and 53 cases in full-term neonates(born between 39-40+6 weeks). All neonates did cranial ultrasound examination in 24 hours after birth, CC-L were measured and compared between the two groups, analyzed the relationship between gender, body weight and CC-L. Results The mean gestational week, mean weight and mean CC-L of early-term neonates were(39.98±0.67) weeks,(3 495±365) g,(44.89±2.27) mm, the mean gestational week, mean weight, mean CC-L of full-term neonates were(38.20±0.67) weeks,(3 170±406) g and(43.68±1.33) mm, the mean weight, mean CC-L of full-term neonates were higher than early-term neonates(P<0.05). CC-L were not significantly correlated with body weight, gender. Conclusions CC-L of full-term neonates is longer than early-term neonates. Suggested that full-term neonates brain development was better than early-term neonates. In full-term and early-term neonates, weight is not the important factor in brain development.
