Reflect on the Path toward Modernization——Reading Barrington Moore’s Social Origins of Democracy and Tyranny

在《民主和专制的社会起源》一书中,摩尔以其宏观的视野勾勒出世界现代化的三条不同政治演进道路。他认为农民在现代化的道路上占据着不容忽视的地位,并肯定了暴力革命在现代化进程中的必要作用。回顾中国走向现代化的艰难历程,农民和暴力革命起到了决定性影响,但是其所付出的惨痛代价亦值得我们深思。面对孜孜以求的现代化梦想,中国人民正在寻找一条不同以往的新的路径。

In his "Social Origins of democracy and tyranny",Barrington Moore depicts three different political roads toward modernization.He believes that farmers occupy the position which cannot be ignored in the modern road,and endorses the violent revolution in the modernization process of the necessary role.Recalling the difficult process of China’s modernization,farmers and violent revolution have played a decisive impact,but the terrible price is also worth considering.Today,the Chinese people are looking for a different new path toward modernization.
