In Far from the Madding Crowd, Bathsheba confronts patriarchy with her independence in character,economy and emotion and displays an unconventional independent female image. However, after experiencing a series of protests from people and from fate, she eventually gives up her independent economic base and self-awareness and yields to conventional marriage, ideas and social environment. The collapse of this image is mainly due to the author's patriarchal perspective, inner conflict and the influence of Shakespearean character tragedies.
