Roosters, one of the most common poultry in human society, are featured by bright-color feathers and an imposing demeanor, holding head high all the time with a big,red crest. They are also an emblem of honesty, talent, virtue, gallantry, benevolence and justice in traditional Chinese culture. Moreover,as one of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs, they are said to bear profound association with the formation of twenty-four solar terms and the agrarian society in ancient China. This paper attempts to interpret the cultural implication of rooster-shaped chinaware and emblazonry from their origin, characteristics and other perspectives with the theory of functional cultural anthropology.
