A Study of the Epitaph of Zhang Yue

张说是唐代文章大家,他与苏廷硕二人的文章被时人誉为"燕许大手笔"。诰颂公文和碑志文是张说文章创作最为重要的两个部分,其碑志文在对墓主一生历史的述说的过程中,在题材、章法、文体等方面皆有新的创造,显示出了高度的文学创作水平,直接影响了其后的古文家。

Zhang Yue is one of the best essayists in Tang Dynasty. The essays written by him and Su Tingshuo had been known as 'Yan Xu Dashoubi' in Tang Dynasty, because they were both skilled in writing articles. The official articles and epitaph were two important parts in his writing career. He had some new creations on subject matter, art of composition, style, etc. in his epitaph-writing. His epitaph had a directly effect on the subsequent ancient article writers.
