The Masque of the Red Death is the representative work written by Allan Poe. Many researchers have tried to explain the horror and mysterious atmosphere from different perspectives,such as Freudian psycho-analytical study,symbolism,narrative interpretation,etc. They all focus on literary perspectives,but the linguistic analysis of this kind of stories is neglected. Therefore,this paper tries to analyze this short story in terms of Systemic Functional Grammar. The paper combines transitivity model and ergative model together to explore the experiential meaning of the story and interpret how the story creates horrific and mysterious atmosphere.
